Wynyard is charming coastal service centre on Inglis
River in
Tasmania’s NW region 341 km n-w of Hobart.
European settlement began in 1850s and the ensuing
half century saw Wynyard develop into the region’s
most important port followed by the arrival of the
railway and an airport. Today this pretty town is
known for its many elegant timber houses and rich
surrounding farming and grazing lands. Tulip Festival
(Oct). Fossil Bluff (3 km north) site of Australia’s oldest
marsupial fossil discovery which also affords
spectacular surrounding views. Table Cape Lookout (5
km north) stunning views from this 190 m volcanic
plug with nearby Table Cape Light Station (1888).
Rocky Cape NP (29 km n-w) 3 000 ha reserve of coastal
heathlands, amazing cliff formations & springtime
wildflower displays. Numerous bushwalking tracks
include old Postman’s Track and North Cave site of an
ancient Aboriginal
midden.
